Adoption Programs
There are several components to the Pet Adoption Program. They Include:
1. All Shelter animals are featured on the HSLC's website listed under the PetFinder.come site. This website includes their photos and biographies. This information is also transmitted to over a dozen different pet adoption websites to give the animals nation-wide visibility and a better chance for adoption.
2. Pet Sense Adoption - HSLC volunteers transport Shelter cats to the PetSense stores in Tullahona, TN as well as Shelbyville, TN Where they are available for adoption.
3. PetSmart Adoptions - Our volunteers regularly attend adoption events as the closest PetSmart, which is located in Huntsville Alabama. The HSLC is one of several organizations that apperar on a nearly weekly schedule. We now find that people come to PetSmart just for these events, and our adoption of older and larger dogs is quite successful.
4. Off Site Adoptions Events - HSLC volunteers regularly take adultdogs and some puppies to various locations, i.e. local festivals, local pet stores, to show them off and hopefully find them a new home. Adult dogs are often overlooked at the Shelter. Off Site Adoptions help them gain visibility, socialize them, and give a little leash traing as well.
5. Veterans and First Responder discounts - We give US Veterans and First Responders discounted or waive fees for pet adoptions with current ID. Our board feels as though this is a small way of paying back those that serve us, and with the increased awareness of PTSD, pets have been proven to be a calming factor in many instances!
Adoption Events and Rescue Transports: Many adoption events hosted by area businesses, and transports to local and long distance rescue partners are planned throughout the year which help us save many lives!
BFF
BFF, started in 2014, encourages locals to foster a cat, dog, litter of kittens until the Shelter staff can find them new homes. In some cases an animal is recovering from an illness and needs a quiet place to recover, is pregnat and needs a place to give birth, or is experiencing shelter stress and needs a break. Animals can be fostered for a few days or a few weeks. Potential adopters can foster an animal while they ascertain whether it is a good match for their family.
Animal health-care program
Providing adequate medical care to ensure crowded shelter animals remain healthy and adoptable is a challenge. We take every opportunity we can affored to give all pets that come through our shelter the best we can! Pets are vaccinated, and de-wormed. We test many adult dogs for heart-worms, and provide flea, tick, and heart-worm preventative as available. Every pet is either neutered or is sent home with a voucher to go toward a neuter.
PAL- Prevent Anoter Litter: Surrender a litter with a $25 donation and we will help you get mama spayed for free!
Re-uniting Pets with Owners:
Pets can get out and get lost in the blink of an eye. It's a scary experience for both owner and pets. We do our best here to try and get losts pets reunited with their owners. There are a few different ways we go about this. When an animal comes to our shelter we scan them for a microchip. Microchips are a tiny device under the skin that can be scanned with a specific tool, and traced back to the owner.
In an additional attempt to help reunite furry family we take extra effort to post lost or found pets in the community online. We may not always be able to take the found pet in but we are always happy to try to help spread the word and find their people.
When we do take in a pet with a collar that seems to be missing we hold them a least 5 days before ever attempting to adopt them out. This is to give owners time to come find their pets here at the shelter before we try to re-home them.
We use all of these tools at our disposal to try to increase the pets way to stay in their loving homes, and find their way back to their families.
Help us save one little life at a time!
